Researcher wins Excellence in Industry award
August 17, 2011
The American Phytopathological Society (APS) recognized Pioneer research fellow Bill Dolezal with its 2011 Excellence in Industry award. Dolezal was presented this prestigious award during the 2011 joint APS and International Association for the Plant Protection Sciences (IAPPS) meeting in Honolulu, Hawaii.
The Excellence in Industry award recognizes APS members demonstrating outstanding contributions to plant pathology. Dolezal has been a member of APS for more than 35 years, serving on numerous APS committees, including the APS Public Policy Board as an industry representative. He has spoken to various APS teams regarding the future in plant pathology education, career opportunities in the industry, the role private industry plays in crop biosecurity, and culture collection in germplasm. He has been involved in the efforts to enhance greater public/private collaborations for monitoring new and emerging plant pathogens. Besides his numerous roles with APS, Dolezal has recently served as chair of the American Seed Trade Association’s Phytosanitary Committee and continues to serve as a plant pathologist on the USDA Maize Crop Germplasm Committee.
Dolezal has worked with many of the worldwide viral diseases of maize, developing resistant germplasm for gray leaf spot, northern corn leaf blight, all three maize rusts, anthracnose stalk rot, the major ear molds, and their mycotoxins. Dolezal serves as an instructor for corn disease identification and phytosanitary field inspections both internally within Pioneer and with several state phytosanitary regulatory agencies. He continues efforts to coordinate the worldwide maize pathology programs and improve the monitoring systems for Pioneer.
APS is the premier society dedicated to high-quality, innovative plant pathology research. For more than a century, members of APS have been making and sharing significant breakthroughs, both for the science and society. APS is driven by a distinctive community of scientists, whose energy and commitment ensure the global advancement of this critical science.
