Detasselers

Summer Jobs - Pioneer Hi-Bred

Pioneer detasseling is more than just a summer job, it's an outdoor adventure! It's also a great way to develop long-lasting friendships and memories.

Each year, we hire thousands of detasselers in the summer months, who play a key role in the production of our hybrid seed corn. Detasseling is an important step in this process.

Detasseling positions are available throughout North America, so consider a rewarding experience as a detasseler -- and make good money, too. Have fun with your friends, stick with it, and detasseling really pays off!

What's Detasseling

Tassels grow on corn plants. Detasseling involves removing tassels from corn, which forces cross-pollination.

Steps involved include finding the tassel, grabbing it, pulling it off, and throwing it to the ground. That is all there is to it! But, it must be done right, or the crop will be ruined.

Every summer (late June or early July), Pioneer hires thousands of dependable people to detassel in teams. The teams usually work a few weeks.

How Old Do You Need To Be?

The minimum age for detasselers varies by state:

  • Illinois – 12
  • Indiana – 12
  • Iowa – 14
  • Michigan – 13
  • Missouri – 14
  • Nebraska – 12
