New Opportunities in Variable-Rate Seeding of Corn

In studies conducted by Pioneer, season-to-season variation in optimum plant population was as high as 12,000 plants/acre in the same location in the same field. Due to this variation, assigning specific seeding rates for zones within variable fields is usually not realistic.

This article reviews Pioneer plant population recommendations for corn production, documents challenges in predicting optimum plant populations and seeding rates, and discusses several new opportunities for more efficient use of variable-rate seeding devices.
