Entomology Field Research Summer Workers

If you are local to the Des Moines area and are looking for a summer job, check out the job openings in screening corn for resistance to insects with the Entomology group at our Johnston Research locations.

Positions will last between 6-8 weeks, primarily during June and July. As weather allows, positions will typically work 40 hours per week and be paid time and a half for hours worked over 40 and for time worked on Sundays. During June, travel to other locations for tissue sampling and infesting roots may be available. In July, travel to other locations for root digging/washing duties may be available.

The start and end dates vary based on the weather and getting tasks accomplished.

Job Requirements
Individuals interested in field entomology positions must meet the following job requirements to obtain summer employment:

  • Willingness to work 40 or more hours per week, including some weekends, may occasionally be traveling in other states requiring overnight stays.
  • Ability to follow instructions and complete detail oriented tasks associated with conducting research experiments is essential.
  • Ability to work with insect larvae and be around other field insects.
  • Ability to work in teams and dig out heavy corn roots.
  • Ability to work around corn, pollens, and dusts for long periods of time.
  • Ability to walk and stand for long periods of time.
  • Willingness to work outdoors, rain or shine, in hot, wet and dry conditions.
  • Must be self-motivated and possess a positive attitude.
  • Minimum of high school diploma.
  • Must follow safety requirements (wear safety glasses, closed toed shoes, gloves, seatbelts etc)
