Herbicide-tolerant trait for sunflowers receives regulatory approvals in Canada

U.S. growers will no longer need a contract to grow Pioneer® brand 63N81 with the DuPont™ ExpressSun™ Trait

DES MOINES, Iowa, January 25, 2008 - The DuPont™ ExpressSun™ trait has been granted new Canadian regulatory approvals that will make it easier for U.S. growers to plant sunflower hybrids containing this herbicide tolerant trait, including Pioneer® brand hybrid 63N81. Pioneer, a DuPont business, was the first to bring a sunflower hybrid to market containing the ExpressSun™ trait.

"The Canadian approvals benefit U.S. sunflower growers because they will no longer require a contract to grow Pioneer hybrid 63N81," explains Monica Meimann, Pioneer marketing manager for canola and sunflowers. "The new feed, food and environmental approvals illustrate that the regulatory approval process in Canada is working well."

The new approvals also mean U.S. growers will now be free to market their grain to the elevator or grain buyer of their choice.

For Canadian sunflower growers, the new approvals bring them one step closer to having access to a hybrid that will be tolerant to Express® herbicide in-crop. "In Canada, Express® herbicide is not yet registered for use on sunflowers, though regulatory approval is expected within the next few years," Meimann says.

The ExpressSun™ trait is non-transgenic and provides tolerance to postemergence applications of DuPont™ Express® herbicide with Total® soluable granules, giving sunflower growers improved weed control over conventional systems. In the U.S., Express® herbicide with Total® soluable granules is labeled to provide control of a number of troublesome annual and perennial broadleaf weeds including redroot pigweed, lamb's-quarters, Canada thistle, wild mustard and tansy mustard.

"The Canadian approvals allow more sunflower growers to take advantage of the unique utility of the ExpressSun™ trait," says Marty Wojcik, DuPont portfolio manager. "Now they can get all the benefits of the improved weed control DuPont™ Express® with Total® soluable granule offers without contract hassles and marketing restrictions."

Pioneer hybrid 63N81 is the first hybrid with the ExpressSun™ trait to be offered in the NuSun® industry. It has outstanding yield potential as well as a solid package of agronomic traits including superior oil content and very good root and stalk strength. It is currently only available in the U.S. 63N82, another new hybrid with the ExpressSun™ trait is expected for 2009 commercial sales in the U.S., the second of many more to come that are currently in development in the Pioneer pipeline.
