Global Highlights

The International Operations fast facts section covers a broad range at-a-glance information ranging from international market size, exports, team recognition, customer support, and more.

Argentina
  • 63% of the total crop area in Argentina is planted with biotech crops.

Brazil
  • Brazil currently has 12.2 million hectares (30 million acres) planted to corn and 22 million hectares (54 million acres) planted to soybeans.
  • In Brazil, a second corn crop - called Safrinha - is planted every year, typically after soybean harvest. Safrinha accounts for 20-30% of Brazil corn production.
  • For several years, Pioneer has been recognized, by an independent survey, to be the most trusted brand in agriculture.

China
  • China is the world's second largest corn market at 62.5 million acres.
  • China's growing economy will help increase demand of agricultural products everywhere. Meat consumption in China is increasing by 3 lbs per person per year - this is 4 billion lbs per year (Source USDA- PS&D).
  • Fifty percent of the world's hogs are in China, so there is a high demand for grain for livestock feed.

Chile
  • The agriculture industry in Chile is one of the most productive in the world.

Egypt
  • While grain is still the primary crop in the country at nearly two million acres, silage production has grown from zero to 50,000 acres in 10 years.

France
  • France has the greatest grain exports in Europe, totaling 7,900,000 metric tons, as well as the largest single-country crop hectares in the European Union.

Germany
  • Of special note is that the Pioneer team received a 2004 DuPont Marketing Excellence Award for business growth achieved through implementation of a "commissionaire" system that retains Pioneer ownership of seed. The system has improved our market share and established more direct relationships between Pioneer and the distributing retailers who act as commissionaires, or agents.

Hungary
  • One of the world's largest seed production facilities is Pioneer's location in Szarvas. At full capacity, 32,000 tons of corn seed can be conditioned, packaged, and distributed each year. The plant now contracts approximately 10,000 hectares of corn a year.

India
  • Hybrid conversion is becoming more prevalent in several crops. In India, only 35 percent of the total corn hectares are hybrid while millet hectares are at 39 percent. Less than 2 percent of the 44 million hectares of rice planted in India each year are hybrid. The 15 to 20 percent yield advantage with hybrid rice is driving conversion.

Italy
  • Farms in Italy are fairly small. 5 percent are larger than 20 hectares, 20 percent of the farms are 5 to 20 hectares, and 75 percent of the farms are 5 hectares or less.

Kenya
  • In Kenya, maize is a major staple food but land is limited and agricultural productivity has not been able to cope with population growth, leading to annual imports and food insecurity.
  • Doubling and Tripling Farmer Yield in Kenya: Two new Pioneer® brand hybrids, PHB 30V53 and PHB 30G19, are predicted to double and nearly triple yield for farmers in Kenya.

Mexico
  • Mexico is the center of origin for corn - or maize - which was originally bred from a wild plant some 7,000 years ago and where both civilization and culture are intertwined with this crop.
  • The diversity in this country is immense. Farms range in size from several thousand hectares down to less than one hectare. Technology varies from 100 percent irrigated, high technology farms in the Northwest, all the way to hand planted open pollinated varieties and landraces on the tropical hillsides in the South.
  • Corn growing elevations range from sea level to more than 2,000 meters above sea level. The diverse climates and markets mean that corn is being planted and/or harvested somewhere in Mexico year round.

Philippines
  • In the Philippines, Asiatic Cornborer destroys up to 80 percent of the country's crop, dropping the average yields to only 2.8 tons per hectare.
  • About one-third of Filipino farmers rely on corn production as their major source of income. In 2003, the Philippines became the first Asian country to approve the commercial planting of a biotech food crop - Bt corn, which Pioneer sells there.
  • Pioneer partnered with the Corn Husk Association of the Philippines to create the Life, Livelihood and Corn community service project. Filipino farmers learn to create crafts out of cornhusks they sell to earn additional income.

Russia
  • There are currently over 6 million hectares of sunflowers in Russia; 1.5 million of these hectares are planted with hybrids

Spain
  • The team offers outstanding customer services including: soil and silage analysis, personalized guided planting programs, European Corn Borer (ECB) and Sesamia monitoring, and a private weather station network providing online information for farm decision-making in real time.

Thailand
  • Pioneer Thailand won a DuPont Sustainable Growth Award in 2003 for the development of the "Corn for School Lunch" program. The program provides seed corn and agronomic advice to local communities. The corn is planted, harvested and sold by the communities. The proceeds are then used to support lunch programs at local schools.

Turkey
  • The country is putting more land, approximately 1.5 million hectares, into use due to increased irrigation.
