The soybean aphid has become a threat to virtually all soybeans grown in the US and Canada. In 2007, aphids have been detected throughout the Midwest, but in modest numbers. Severe cold temperatures in early April likely reduced high overwintering populations, but the effect on this year’s aphid risk is unknown. This article addresses soybean aphid damage, life cycle, response to climate, and management. Spraying considerations, Pioneer’s antiobiosis ratings, biocontrol, insecticide timing and ongoing research are discussed.
