Northern Leaf Blight of Corn

In 2004, cool, moist weather conditions highly favorable for northern leaf blight (NLB) development persisted in most of the U.S. and Canada. As a result, NLB was found at economic levels in many areas. Because NLB survives in corn leaves, husks and other tissues, the disease has been most pervasive in no-till or minimum-till fields in continuous corn. Fields with a serious outbreak in 2004 will have a higher risk of NLB infection in 2005, although the disease level will be very strongly influenced by 2005 weather. This Crop Insights describes NLB development, symptoms, damage, and management practices to reduce its impact on the corn crop.
