Seed Field Inspectors

Fields of greenIf you enjoy working outdoors and have your summers off, consider a Seed Field Inspector position with Pioneer. These positions are located at our seed corn growing locations in Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan.

The Seed Field Inspector plays an important role in raising a quality and high yielding seed corn crop. They are responsible for inspecting seed corn fields and reporting inspection data to ensure field production meets company and state certification agency quality specifications. Assigned seed fields are inspected a minimum of five times prior to and during seed pollination. Some inspection results are recorded electronically using a hand-held personal digital assistance (PDA) device.

The seed field inspector reports crop growth progress and compliance with quality specifications to local management and their inspection supervisor. First year inspectors have a mentor assigned to them to help learn the inspection process.

The work usually involves 25 to 30 continuous days and inspections are handled by walking across entire seed corn fields. There are three days of training held June 16-18 at Johnston, Iowa, and field inspection occurs approximately from July 1 through August 10. Most inspectors stay in a motel due to the distance from their home to the seed fields. Housing arrangements, meals, and vehicle mileage reimbursement are provided. Adherence to safety policies is required.

Other requirements include:

  • Minimum of high school diploma.
  • At least 18 years old prior to working.
