Kenya Mid and High Altitude Markets

Situation

In Kenya, maize is a major staple food, but land is limited and agri-cultural productivity has not been able to keep pace with population growth, leading to annual imports and food insecurity. The Kenya Mid- and High-Altitude Project goal is to move farmers who are barely breaking even on maize production to realize the full potential of intensive maize production. This is a collaboration between Pioneer and its Kenya distributor, FarmChem.

Solution

Pioneer East Africa has long realized that its growth and success in Kenya depends on the Highlands/Medium wet segment. The performance edge of two new Pioneer® brand hybrids, PHB 30V53 and PHB 30G19, along with Pioneer's high-quality agronomic services to influential key farms in what is called the "Granary of Kenya" will help increase productivity and make customers more profitable. At the same time, it will help the expected maize green revolution take off in the next five years.

Impact

This project is on target to improve customer profitability, and is predicted to double and nearly triple yield for farmers in Kenya. Kenyan farmers are experiencing the new Pioneer hybrids for the first time in 180 field demos of one-acre side-by-side plots. These demonstrate both Pioneer products and best agronomic practices.
