Growers Planting Pioneer® brand Sorghum Hybrids Win 10 of 15 National Categories

in NGSP Yield and Management Contest

DES MOINES, IOWA, Jan. 4, 2005 - Growers planting Pioneer® brand sorghum hybrids recently won 10 of the 15 national categories in the 2004 National Grain Sorghum Producers' (NGSP) Yield and Management Contest. All these growers won with Pioneer sorghum hybrid 84G62.

Farmers growing Pioneer sorghum hybrids finished first place in three of the five national contest segments. First-, second- and third-place national honors were awarded in each segment.

The NGSP Yield and Management Contest is an annual competition among sorghum producers with the goal of producing the highest yields. Growers compete within a broad range of sorghum production classes, including conventional-till irrigated, conventional-till non-irrigated, mulch-till non-irrigated, no-till non-irrigated and reduced-till irrigated.

Among state winners, growers planting Pioneer sorghum hybrids won 70 of the 98 first-, second- and third-place categories. Fifty-four of the state winners won with Pioneer hybrid 84G62.

A breakout of state winners who planted Pioneer sorghum hybrids is:

  • Conventional-till irrigated - 8 of 11 state places (6 of 7 first places)
  • Conventional-till non-irrigated - 22 of 30 state places (9 of 13 first places)
  • Mulch-till non-irrigated - 18 of 23 state places (13 of 16 first places)
  • No-till non-irrigated - 17 of 23 state places (10 of 13 first places)
  • Reduced-till irrigated - 5 of 11 state places (3 of 7 first places)

"We're pleased to see the tremendous results that growers achieved in the NGSP contest this year," said Bill Fleet, vice president, North American Sales, Pioneer. "Their diligent management practices along with top-notch seed products led to their success. That so many top-yielding hybrids in this contest are Pioneer products shows the advantages Pioneer brings to the financial bottom line of sorghum producers."

National and state winners will be recognized Feb. 19-22 at the 2005 Sorghum Industry Conference in Reno, Nev.
