Black Cutworm Control

A widespread incidence of black cutworm has appeared in the central and southern Corn Belt, some severe enough to meet or pass the economic threshold for treatment. It's important to get out in your fields and scout. While you are there look for the difference between Pioneer® brand hybrids stacked with Herculex® XTRA^ insect protection and other technologies. Below is more information about controlling black cutworm.

Pat Tomlinson Pat Tomlinson, Pioneer account manager from Christian County, Illinois, shows the impact black cutworms have had on a field and compares the difference in technologies for black cutworm control.

Black cutworms can impact corn hybrids that do not contain Herculex® XTRA^ insect protection. In this image, black cutworms severed DeKalb DKC63-39 in a field in Christian County, Illinois, despite the fact the seed was treated with Poncho® 250.
Here is a side-by-side comparison of two triple-stacked corn hybrids. Left of the row with the orange stakes is Pioneer® brand corn hybrid 33D14 with Herculex® XTRA^. The row with orange stakes, and rows to the right of it, are DeKalb DKC63-39 containing YieldGard® Plus. The orange stakes mark plants lost to black cutworm feeding.
