2005 Drought Impact on Corn Hybrid Performance

Drought conditions have prevailed in many areas of the central and south central U.S. this year (especially in Illinois), affecting millions of crop acres. In these areas, hybrid yields will not always rank as expected. Growers in affected areas should consider incorporating performance information from other geographies and years with more typical conditions into their hybrid evaluation process. This Crop Insights describes the 2005 growing season and its impact on the corn crop, explains how relative hybrid yields vary with weather, and offers suggestions for selecting hybrids most likely to perform well over time. This includes using the EnClass(SM) system, which was developed by Pioneer researchers to help growers better understand environmental effects on product performance.
