Pearl Millet Product Development

The Pearl Millet Research Team develops proprietary millet hybrids for India and Pakistan. Millet is grown for both grain and stover, and is used for human consumption in some areas of India. Major breeding objectives are yield for grain and stover, yield stability, drought tolerance, heat tolerance, quick maturity, standability and downy mildew resistance.

Highlights of Pioneer Pearl Millet Research:

Germplasm Enhancement, Inbred Development and Hybrid Evaluation - The research program in India is designed to enhance existing germplasm for key traits using exotic germplasm from various parts of the world. A major focus of the breeding program is to develop inbred parents that can be used to produce superior hybrids, and to test experimental hybrids in the major millet-growing regions of India. Hybrids are evaluated for yield, standability and disease resistance. Superior products are also moved to Pakistan.
