What to Expect

Your job as a detasseler is very important to Pioneer. Sometime in late June or early July, you'll get a call. When nature says it's time to detassel, we'll need you for a couple of weeks. You'll have to get up early (5:00 or 6:00 am), and be sure to eat a good breakfast!

You'll have to dress right. Wear long pants, layers of shirts, a hat, socks, high-top tennis shoes, and lots of sunscreen. Pioneer will also provide you with gloves and eye protection, which are required for safety reasons.

Pack a lunch, some snacks, and lots of water. Then, you will be ready to meet your crew leader and team before you start the day! You'll hit the fields, find the tassel, grab it, pull it off, and throw it to the ground. You'll go down every row, pulling thousands of tassels.

We won't lie to you -- detasseling is hard work. You'll go home tired, but just think about all of the money you'll make!

Money to Spend

If you are planning to work this summer, you must have places to go, people to see, and things to buy. So, why not do something different and detassel for Pioneer? Get a group of your friends together to detassel, and you can work as a team. You will earn at least minimum wage, and often times, it’s higher than that, because crew leaders may put together incentive and bonus programs.

Work hard, and play harder! Think about that computer you've been wanting, new clothes, CDs, or maybe a DVD player. Detasseling is an outdoor adventure, and it's the summer job that pays off! Work for a few weeks, make good money, and the rest of the summer is yours!
