New Corn Numbering System Provides More Information

Pioneer has a new corn hybrid naming system that affects hybrid platforms that are new in 2009 and beyond. The new system makes it easier to identify the base genetics, comparative relative maturity and traits found in Pioneer® brand corn hybrids.

The new numbering system is based on Pioneer identity, maturity, base genetics and trait identity. One number will identify the base genetics, including the conventional hybrid number and all those with additional traits.

All new Pioneer corn seed names will begin with the letter P. Hybrids available prior to 2009 will keep their previously assigned numbers to stay in compliance with seed industry laws.

How the System Works

The new naming system streamlines corn hybrid designations under a "platform," or hybrid family name. The base genetic line and the conversion that include any technology segments share common numbers.

Identifying Technologies in the Product Name

If a hybrid contains no technology segments, the name is a five-digit number. If the hybrid contains one or more technologies, these will be designated by specific letters.
