We have opportunities in the Des Moines/Johnston area for germplasm protection summer research workers. The summer workers will collect phenotypic traits at our Johnston research locations. Training will be provided.


Positions will last between four and eight weeks, between mid-to-late June and early August. The traits that are collected vary by timing within the season. Phenotypic traits vary from stand counts, tassel lengths, plant and ear heights, and a wide range of other morphological descriptions.

The start and end dates vary based on the weather and completing assigned projects.


Individuals interested in these positions must meet the following job requirements to obtain summer employment:

  • Ability to follow instructions and complete detail-oriented tasks associated with conducting research experiments.
  • Ability to work around corn, pollen and dust for long periods of time.
  • Willingness to work up to 40 or more hours per week, including weekends.
  • Ability to walk and stand for long periods of time.
  • Willingness to work outdoors — rain or shine — in hot, wet and dry conditions.
  • Must be self-motivated and possess a positive attitude.
  • Minimum age 16.
  • Must follow safety requirements. For example wearing safety glasses, closed toed shoes, gloves, seatbelts and more.
