Pioneer Premium Seed Treatment for Grain Sorghum
Agronomy Research Summary - 2011
In 2012, Pioneer Premium Seed Treatment choices for grain sorghum will include a package of fungicide and insecticide providing unmatched protection and control against a broad spectrum of early season seed and soil-borne diseases, and protection from insects. The addition of Dynasty® (azoxystrobin) will enhance the level of activity against Fusarium, Rhizoctonia, and Pythium and provide additional suppression of sorghum downy mildew and further enhance the performance of Pioneer's industry leading germplasm.

Dynasty fungicide has been added to the Pioneer Premium Seed Treatment offering in grain sorghum, providing a broader range of protection against early season disease pathogens. Dynasty has been tested extensively by Pioneer Agronomy Sciences in on-farm and small-plot research trials and has demonstrated an exceptional level of performance complementary to Pioneer germplasm.
Sorghum downy mildew is a pathogen that can cause significant yield loss in portions of the western United States. The additional mode of action provided by Dynasty has shown an increased suppression of the pathogen over a standard fungicide package (Figure 1).

Value of Insect Control in a Seed Treatment
From 2009 to 2011, Pioneer conducted 181 on-farm seed treatment research experiments. The data collected from the research show that an insecticide treatment combined with a fungicide treatment (FST/IST) out-yields a fungicide only treatment (FST) by nearly 2 bushels per acre. Insect pressure can pose a serious threat to a young sorghum crop. Having early season insect control promotes seedling growth and vigor, increases the opportunity for optimum yields, and alleviates additional plant stress that a fungicide treatment alone cannot.
