Effect of Increased Corn Seeding Rate in Michigan

Effect of Increased Corn Seeding Rate in Michigan

Objectives

  • Compare yield performance of Pioneer® brand products at a standard grower-selected seeding rate and a seeding rate 5,000 seeds/acre over the grower-selected rate (Table 1).
  • Generate information to help better manage newer genetic platforms that perform well at higher plant populations.

Study Description

Locations: 15 in Michigan
Replications:      1 per location
Pioneer® Brand Families:
  P0210, P0255 (southern Michigan)
P9690, P9807 (central Michigan)
Seeding Rates:      Grower-selected standard rate
5,000 seeds/acre over grower-selected rate

Table 1.  Average planting rate ranges
Pioneer®
Brand Family¹
Normal 5,000 Over Difference
  ------------ seeds/acre ------------
P0210 33,500 39,800 6,300
P0255 34,300 39,300 5,000
P9690 33,700 38,700 5,000
P9807 33,600 38,600 5,000

Results

  • Yield of P9690, P9807 and P0255 families were optimized at grower seeding rates of 33 to 34 thousand seeds/acre (Figure 1).
  • Yield of P0210 family was significantly greater at seeding rates approaching 40,000 seeds/acre, with an 8.9 bu/acre average yield advantage (Figure 1). This may be attributable to higher yield levels at the tested sites.
  • There were no differences in grain moisture or test weight between seeding rates within a hybrid family (data not shown).

1 Family identifies hybrid/brand that have the same base genetics. Manage hybrid/brand within the same family similarly. Pioneer® brand products are provided subject to the terms and conditions of purchase which are part of the labeling and purchase documents. 2013 data are based on average of all comparisons made in 15 locations through December 12, 2013. Multi-year and multi-location is a better predictor of future performance. Do not use these or any other data from a limited number of trials as a significant factor in product selection. Product responses are variable and subject to a variety of environmental, disease, and pest pressures. Individual results may vary.

AcreMax®

AM - Optimum® AcreMax® Insect Protection system with YGCB, HX1, LL, RR2. Contains a single-bag integrated refuge solution for above-ground insects. In EPA-designated cotton growing counties, a 20% separate refuge must be planted with Optimum AcreMax products.
AM-R - Optimum® AcreMax® Insect Protection system with YGCB, HX1, RR2. Contains a single-bag integrated refuge solution for above-ground insects. Do not spray with Liberty®. Not all seeds in the bag are tolerant to Liberty herbicide. In EPA-designated cotton growing counties, a 20% separate refuge must be planted with Optimum AcreMax products.

AMXT (Optimum® AcreMax® XTreme) - Contains a single-bag integrated refuge solution for above- and below-ground insects. The major component contains the Agrisure® RW trait, the YieldGard® Corn Borer gene, and the Herculex® XTRA genes. In EPA-designated cotton growing counties, a 20% separate corn borer refuge must be planted with Optimum AcreMax XTreme products. HXX - Herculex® XTRA contains the Herculex I and Herculex RW genes. YGCB - The YieldGard® Corn Borer gene offers a high level of resistance to European corn borer, southwestern corn borer and southern cornstalk borer; moderate resistance to corn earworm and common stalk borer; and above average resistance to fall armyworm. LL - Contains the LibertyLink® gene for resistance to Liberty® herbicide. RR2 - Contains the Roundup Ready® Corn 2 trait that provides crop safety for over-the-top applications of labeled glyphosate herbicides when applied according to label directions.
