Intensive Corn Management Demonstration

Intensive Corn Management Demonstration

Objective

  • Compare corn yield performance using a system of aggressive soil fertility and pest management practices with a more conventional low-input system.

Ears in Intensive Corn Management System
Ears of Pioneer® P1151AM™ brand corn in the intensive management system; Sept. 18, 2013.

Study Description

Planting Date:   May 13, 2013
Location: Johnston, Iowa
Plot Layout: (4) 10 x 17.4 ft plots per entry
Factors:
  Pioneer®
  Hybrids/Brands1:
P1151AM™ (AM, LL, RR2)
P1365AMX™ (AMX, LL, RR2)
  Population:      32,000 and 38,000 plants/acre
  Management System:
      Intensive Management System:
          • Nitrogen Fertility Program:
               • 180 lbs/acre N preplant
               • 50 lbs/acre side-dress N applied at V6 growth stage
               • 50 lbs/acre side-dress N applied at VT growth stage
         • Foliar Fungicide/Insecticide Application (VT):
               • Aproach® Prima (6.8 oz/acre) + Prevathon®
                  (20 oz/acre)
    Conventional Management System:
       • Nitrogen Fertility Program: 180 lbs/acre N preplant
       • No foliar fungicide/insecticide

Results

Chart: Hybrid/Mgmt System Effect on Yield

Chart: Population/Mgmt System Effect on Yield

  • The Johnston farm experienced a wet spring, resulting in some early season flooding, followed by a drier summer. As a result, the yield increases in the intensive management system are likely at least partially attributable to the side-dress nitrogen.
  • Minimal foliar disease symptoms were observed, presumably due to the dry conditions later in the growing season.
  • Intensive management practices increased average yield 16 bu/acre with P1151AM™ and 13.7 bu/acre with Pioneer® P1365AMX™ brand corn.
  • Intensive management practices increased yield 12.2 bu/acre at 32,000 plants/acre and 17.4 bu/acre at 38,000 plants/acre.
  • Average yield of both products was greater at 32,000 plants/acre than at 38,000 plants/acre (data not shown).
  • The greatest average yield (233.7 bu/acre) was achieved with P1151AM™ at 32,000 plants/acre with intensive management.

1All Pioneer products are hybrids unless designated with AM1, AM, AMRW, AMX and AMXT, in which case they are brands.
Pioneer® brand products are provided subject to the terms and conditions of purchase which are part of the labeling and purchase documents. 2013 data are based on average of all comparisons made in one location through December 4, 2013. Multi-year and multi-location is a better predictor of future performance. Do not use these or any other data from a limited number of trials as a significant factor in product selection. Product responses are variable and subject to a variety of environmental, disease, and pest pressures. Individual results may vary.
