Seed Flow and Plantability of Treated Soft Red Winter Wheat Seed

Introduction & Objective

  • Certain environmental conditions may cause treated wheat seed to flow and plant differently through seeding equipment.
  • Testing was conducted to evaluate the impact of seed treatment and planting lubricants on the flow and plantability of wheat seed
     
    Pioneer® brand treated wheat seed

Study Description

Flowability Trial (conducted by DuPont Pioneer)
   Seed Treatment: Dividend Extreme®/Vibrance® FST
+ Gaucho® IST
   Wheat Varieties: 5 wheat varieties with seed sizes ranging
from 10,500 to 13,500 seeds/pound
   Planting Lubricant: 1. Talc (1/8 cup per unit)
2. No talc applied
   
Plantability Trial (conducted by Syngenta Seedcare)
   Seed Treatments: 1. Dividend Extreme/Vibrance FST 
    + Gaucho IST (Current Standard)
2. Vibrance® Extreme FST + Gaucho IST
   Environments: Hot humid, cool humid, hot dry, and cool dry
   Testing Equipment:    Great Plains mechanical drill system
 

Results

  • The addition of talc to treated wheat seed improved seed flowability from 3% to 11% over seed with no application of talc.
  • Observation during application of talc suggests that thorough mixing of talc with seed produces the best results.
  • Results of a 2014 Syngenta wheat plantability study showed the current Pioneer standard seed treatment (Dividend Extreme/Vibrance FST + Gaucho IST) measured higher for seed flow through the drill compared to Vibrance Extreme FST + Gaucho IST in various environmental conditions.
