Corn Nematodes – More Common Than You Think!

Nematode Pressure Levels - Illinois

Pioneer Agronomists, Territory Managers and Sales Professionals took over 320 soil samples across southern and western Illinois in May and June of 2020 to assess nematode pressure.

  • 93% of fields sampled had nematodes.

Samples were analyzed for 13 species of nematodes.

  • 43% of fields sampled had medium to high levels of nematodes which can affect crop growth and yield.

Nematodes are widely distributed across southern and western Illinois.

In this study, lance, stubby-root and spiral nematode were the species most commonly found over damage threshold.

  • 41 of 329 fields had two or more species of nematode at medium or high infestation.
  • 53% of continuous corn fields had moderate to high levels of nematodes compared to 41% of first-year corn fields.

In addition to Illinois, this survey was also conducted in Iowa, Missouri, Nebraska and Kansas. Results from the Western Corn Belt showed similar levels of nematode infestation as southern and western Illinois. Spiral, Dagger and Lesion were most likely to cause high infestations requiring management plans.

Success in 2021 and Beyond…

  • Learn nematode pressure on your farm.
  • Plan for coming years. Nematodes are one problem that will not go away if ignored.
  • If damaging levels of corn nematodes are found, implement control measures such as rotating to soybeans or another crop or use Lumialza™ nematicide seed treatment.

Pioneer® Hybrids With Lumialza Nematicide

  • Lumialza nematicide shields roots from yield-robbing nematodes while cooperating with beneficial organisms that improve water and nutrient absorption.
  • National trials have shown yield improvements of 3.7 bu/A under low pressure and up to 9 bu/a in heavy pressure environments.
  • More than 80 days of root protection.
  • Grows with the plant to protect entire root system.

Protect Your Roots From Nematodes

Lumialza™ nematicide seed treatment has shown yield increases of 3.7 bu/A under low nematode pressure and up to 9 bu/A in heavy pressure in national trials.

Lumialza® may not be registered for sale or use in all states. Contact your state pesticide regulatory agency to determine if a product is registered for sale or use in your state. Always read and follow label directions.Performance data is based on 10-state broad-acre head-to-head strip trial comparing Lumialza™ nematicide seed treatment vs. non-nematicide seed treatment utilizing the same insecticide and fungicide recipe in seed applied technology replicated and strip trial data. Yields ranged from 3 to 9 bu/a depending on nematode species and population, in 184 low stress and 54 moderate to high stress locations. Product performance is variable and depends on many factors such as moisture and heat stress, soil type, management practices and environmental stress as well as disease and pest pressures. Individual results may vary. ®™Trademarks of Corteva Agriscience and its affiliated companies. © 2020 CORTEVA
