Corn Nematodes – More Common Than You Think!

Nematode Pressure Levels - Illinois

Pioneer Agronomists, Territory Managers and Sales Professionals took over 320 soil samples across southern and western Illinois in May and June of 2020 to assess nematode pressure.

  • 93% of fields sampled had nematodes.

Samples were analyzed for 13 species of nematodes.

  • 43% of fields sampled had medium to high levels of nematodes which can affect crop growth and yield.

Nematodes are widely distributed across southern and western Illinois.

In this study, lance, stubby-root and spiral nematode were the species most commonly found over damage threshold.

  • 41 of 329 fields had two or more species of nematode at medium or high infestation.
  • 53% of continuous corn fields had moderate to high levels of nematodes compared to 41% of first-year corn fields.

In addition to Illinois, this survey was also conducted in Iowa, Missouri, Nebraska and Kansas. Results from the Western Corn Belt showed similar levels of nematode infestation as southern and western Illinois. Spiral, Dagger and Lesion were most likely to cause high infestations requiring management plans.

  • Plan for coming years. Nematodes are one problem that will not go away if ignored.
