Objective

  • Determine the effect of planting rate on silage yield and quality with Pioneer® brand BMR hybrids.

Study Description

Number of locations: 10

Map: Research Locations

Pioneer® brand BMR hybrids
Hybrid/Brand¹:
       P0238XR (HXX,LL,RR2)   P0783XR (HXX,LL,RR2)
  P1180XR (HXX,LL,RR2)   P1449XR (HXX,LL,RR2)
Populations: (plants/acre)
  32,000            36,000   40,000
Years of Testing
  Pioneer® hybrid P1449XR:  2013 and 2014
  Pioneer® hybrids P0238XR, P0783XR, P1180XR:  2014 only

Results

  • Of the 3 populations tested, 36,000 plants/acre generally provided the best yield and standability for BMR hybrids (Figure 1).
  • Standability was compromised for all hybrids at 40,000 plants/acre at some locations; however, standability was excellent at 32,000 and 36,000 plants/acre for all hybrids at all locations (data not shown).
  • P0238XR, P1180XR, and P1449XR starch percentage appeared to increase at higher populations, while P0783XR appeared to peak at 36,000 plants/acre (Figure 2).
  • 24-hour NDFd results in 2014 were consistent with results of research from previous years. NDFd did not significantly differ across populations (Figure 3).

2013-14 data are based on average of all comparisons made in 10 locations through 11/12/14. Multi-year and multi-location is a better predictor of future performance. Do not use these or any other data from a limited number of trials as a significant factor in product selection. The foregoing is provided for informational use only. Please contact your Pioneer sales professional for information and suggestions specific to your operation. Product responses are variable and subject to a variety of environmental, disease, and pest pressures. Individual results may vary.
