Effect of Increased Corn Seeding Rate in Ohio

Something went wrong. Please try again later...

Objectives

  • Compare yield performance of Pioneer® brand products at a standard grower-selected seeding rate and a seeding rate 5,000 seeds/acre over the grower-selected rate (Table 1).
  • Generate information to help better manage newer genetic platforms that perform well at higher plant populations.

Study Description

Ohio Agronomy Research

Locations: 33 in Ohio
Replications:      1 per location
Pioneer® Brand Families:
   P0965, P0970 (northern Ohio)
P0993, P0987 (southern Ohio)
Seeding Rates: Grower-selected standard rate
5,000 seeds/acre over grower-selected rate

Pioneer®
Brand Family¹
Normal 5,000 Over Difference
  ———— seeds/acre ————
P0965 29,500 34,300 4,800
P0970 32,000 35,400 3,400
P0993 33,200 36,800 3,600
P0987 29,800 34,500 4,700

Results

  • In 2013, yield of P0993, P0970 and P0965 families were optimized at grower seeding rates of 30,000 to 33,000 seeds/acre (Figure 1).
  • Yield of P0987 family was significantly greater at seeding rates approaching 35,000 seeds/acre, with a 7.1 bu/acre average yield advantage (Figure 1). This may be attributable to an above average seeding rate response when compared to other tested hybrids.
  • There were no differences in grain moisture or test weight among seeding rates within a hybrid family (data not shown).

Pioneer® brand products are provided subject to the terms and conditions of purchase which are part of the labeling and purchase documents. 2013 data are based on average of all comparisons made in 33 locations through December 12, 2013. Multi-year and multi-location is a better predictor of future performance. Do not use these or any other data from a limited number of trials as a significant factor in product selection. Product responses are variable and subject to a variety of environmental, disease, and pest pressures. Individual results may vary.

AM1 - Optimum® AcreMax® 1 Insect Protection System with an integrated corn rootworm refuge solution includes HXX, LL, RR2. Optimum AcreMax 1 products contain the LibertyLink® gene and can be sprayed with Liberty® herbicide. The required corn borer refuge can be planted up to half a mile away.

AMX - Optimum® AcreMax® Xtra Insect Protection system with YGCB, HXX, LL, RR2. Contains a single-bag integrated refuge solution for above- and below-ground insects. In EPA-designated cotton growing counties, a 20% separate corn borer refuge must be planted with Optimum AcreMax Xtra products.

HX1 – Contains the Herculex® I Insect Protection gene which provides protection against European corn borer, southwestern corn borer, black cutworm, fall armyworm, lesser corn stalk borer, southern corn stalk borer, and sugarcane borer; and suppresses corn earworm. Herculex® I Insect Protection technology by Dow AgroSciences and Pioneer Hi-Bred. Herculex® and the HX logo are registered trademarks of Dow AgroSciences LLC.

HXX - Herculex® XTRA contains both the Herculex I and Herculex RW genes.
Herculex® XTRA Insect Protection technology by Dow AgroSciences and Pioneer Hi-Bred. Herculex® and the HX logo are registered trademarks of Dow AgroSciences LLC.

YGCB – The YieldGard® Corn Borer gene offers a high level of resistance to European corn borer, southwestern corn borer and southern cornstalk borer; moderate resistance to corn earworm and common stalk borer; and above average resistance to fall armyworm.
YieldGard®, the YieldGard Corn Borer design and Roundup Ready® are registered trademarks used under license from Monsanto Company.

RR2 - Contains the Roundup Ready® Corn 2 trait that provides safety for over-the-top applications of labeled glyphosate herbicides when applied to label directions.
Roundup Ready® is a registered trademark used under license from Monsanto Company.

LL - Contains the LibertyLink® gene for resistance to Liberty® herbicide.
