Objective

  • Evaluate the impact DuPont™ Prevathon® insecticide applied at brown silk on yield, ear damage, and standability of Pioneer® brand hybrids P2088R and P2088YHR.

Study Description

Plot Layout:     10 acre adjacent on-farm blocks
Experimental Design:     Single rep block trials
Number of Locations:     3 (see map below)
Factors:
  • Treatment:
    • 20 fl oz/A Prevathon aerially applied when 2/3 of corn plants had brown silks
    • Non-treated control
  • Pioneer Brand Hybrids:
    • P2088YHR (YGCB, HX1, LL, RR2) (Optimum® Intrasect®)
    • P2088R (RR2) (Refuge)

Map - Southern agronomy research

Results

  • Corn earworm (CEW) infestation was highest in non-treated P2088R plots, but feeding was minimal.
  • Less than 3% of kernels showed any CEW damage regardless of hybrid or treatment (data not shown).
  • Prevathon reduced CEW infestation in P2088R and P2088YHR plots at Wynne, AR and Leland, MS, and in P2088YHR at Halls, TN.
  • Southwestern corn borer reduced standability of P2088R at Wynne, AR.
  • Prevathon improved standability of P2088R at Wynne, AR, to a level similar to standability in P2088YHR (see picture below).
  • Prevathon increased yield of P2088R at Wynne, AR, 32 bu/A but had little effect on yield at other locations.

PIONEER® brand products are provided subject to the terms and conditions of purchase which are part of the labeling and purchase documents. 2012 data are based on average of all comparisons made in 3 locations through Nov. 6, 2012. Multi-year and multi-location is a better predictor of future performance. Do not use these or any other data from a limited number of trials as a significant factor in product selection. Product responses are variable and subject to a variety of environmental, disease and pest pressures. Individual results may vary.
