Foliar Fungicide Treatments in Alfalfa

Objectives
- Determine value of foliar fungicide applications on mature alfalfa using field-scale trials.
- Assess effect of fungicide application on yield, crude protein, digestibility and relative feed quality.
Study Description
| Plot Layout: | Fields were split into treated and untreated blocks. |
| Replicates: | 1 per location. Multiple wind-rows were used as treatment subsamples |
| Locations: | 3 in central MI (see map below) |
| Factors: | Foliar fungicide: Treated, untreated |
- Locations were sprayed with 6 oz/acre of Headline® fungicide 7 days after first cutting.
- Data were collected on the second cutting harvest.
Results
- Results shown are averaged across locations.
- Alfalfa stands were similar among locations.
- Treated and untreated yields and quality components were similar at 2 of the 3 locations.
- 1 location seeded in fall 2009 had a modest yield, protein, relative feed quality and %NDFd gain with foliar fungicide compared to untreated (data not shown).
- This study will be repeated in 2013.

2012 data are based on average of all comparisons made in 3 locations through November 30, 2012. Multi-year and multi-location is a better predictor of future performance. Do not use these or any other data from a limited number of trials as a significant factor in product selection.
