  • Compare the effects of watering every row middle vs. every other row middle for furrow irrigated corn grown in Mississippi on light-textured soils with limited water holding capacity.

Results

  • Yield response to increased irrigation for Pioneer® brand hybrids deemed suitable to be grown in Mississippi under fully irrigated conditions on sandy soils averaged 12.4 bu/acre.
  • Yield response to increased irrigation for more versatile hybrids suitable to be grown under all water regimes was 5.4 bu/acre.
  • Yield response to increased irrigation for Pioneer brand hybrids deemed suitable only for limited irrigation and/or dryland environments was 2.2 bu/acre.
  • Differential responses by hybrids to increased irrigation illustrates the importance of hybrid placement.
  • Responses to increased irrigation demonstrated in this trial should be expected to be more dramatic in years that are excessively hot and dry.
