Pioneer Premium Seed Treatment Performance in the Mid-South

Background

  • Seed treatments are commonly applied to soybeans grown in the Mid-southern U.S.
  • Seed treatments protect planted seeds from various types of soil- and seed-borne seedling diseases.
  • Seed treatments can improve stand establishment in challenging conditions thereby reducing the likelihood of replants that negate the value of early planting.
  • Growers continually look for newer seed treatments that improve seed emergence, stand establishment, stand uniformity, and yield especially under challenging conditions like early planting.
  • Pioneer Premium Seed Treatment offerings (PPST) may deliver better emergence, improved early growth, and higher yields under challenging conditions compared to other competitive seed treatment offerings.
  • Objectives

    • Visually assess the effects of PPST and CruiserMaxx® seed treatment on soybean seedling emergence and stand establishment in the Mid-southern U.S. using a variety of soil types and production systems.
    • Compare soybean yields with PPST and CruiserMaxx seed treatment using a variety of soil types and production systems.

    Results

Soybean yields with PPST and CruiserMaxx seed treatment across 20 locations in 2014 and 2015.

Soybean yields with PPST and CruiserMaxx seed treatment across 14 locations in 2015.

Figure 2. Soybean yields with PPST and CruiserMaxx seed treatment across 14 locations in 2015.

    Summary

    • Across all 20 locations in 2014 and 2015, soybeans treated with PPST had an average yield advantage of 1.9 bu/acre compared to soybeans treated with CruiserMaxx seed treatment.
    • In 2015, soybeans treated with PPST had an average yield advantage of 2.8 bu/acre compared to soybeans treated with CruiserMaxx seed treatment across 14 locations.
    • The yield advantage for soybeans treated with PPST was greater in 2015, which generally had earlier planting dates, greater rainfall, and cooler temperatures compared to 2014.
    • PPST value was maximized under more challenging emergence conditions.
    • Soybeans treated with PPST exhibited better earlier growth when compared to soybeans treated with CruiserMaxx seed treatment at several locations.

Glyphosate Tolerant    R - Contains the Glyphosate Tolerant trait. Always follow grain marketing, stewardship practices and pesticide label directions. Varieties with the Glyphosate Tolerant trait (including those designated by the letter “R” in the product number) contain genes that confer tolerance to glyphosate herbicides. Glyphosate herbicides will kill crops that are not tolerant to glyphosate.
