Objectives

  • Map the geographic distribution and population dynamics of western bean cutworm (WBC).
  • Identify "hot spots" and entry corridors to explore and educate growers on product performance in these regions.

Study Description

Geography: Penn., N.Y., Vt.
Locations: 20 Pioneer traps
  70 Extension traps
Materials: Green bucket traps (dry)
  Scentry® Pheromone LWC1131
  Hercon® Vaportape™ II
Duration: June 18 - August 27, 2013
Reporting: Once per week

Results

WBC Distribution

  • WBC populations are widespread and continue to increase annually in New York.
  • In general, higher WBC counts have been observed in northern and western New York counties.
  • Peak flight was observed during the last week of July.

Chart: trapping results

  • Pristine condition of most moths captured indicate WBC populations are becoming locally established.
  • To date, there have been no reports from NY/NE of economic damage caused by WBC to corn (sweet or field) or dry beans.
  • Pheromone trap monitoring for WBC is planned for 2014.

Additional In-Season Monitoring

2013 data are based on average of all comparisons made in 90 locations through August 27, 2013. Multi-year and multi-location is a better predictor of future performance. Do not use these or any other data from a limited number of trials as a significant factor in product selection. Product responses are variable and subject to a variety of environmental, disease, and pest pressures. Individual results may vary. All products are trademarks of their manufacturers.
