Objectives

  • Determine the effect of planting date on soybean growth and yield for a range of soybean variety maturities.
  • Determine if there is merit to changing to a different maturity soybean variety when planting is delayed.

Study Description

Location:   Westfield, Mass.

  • The study originally included 3 planting dates as well as 0.8 and 1.3 maturity soybean varieties; however, the earliest planting experienced severe deer damage to the earlier varieties and early frost in the fall eliminated the late (July 25) planting.
  • Consequently, the final analysis was limited to comparing yield of full-season soybean varieties planted at a normal timing versus later in the planting season.

 

Results

  • Average yield of late-planted soybean was 11.9 bu/acre less than that of soybean planted at the normal timing (Figure 1).
  • Results were similar among the 3 varieties tested (Figure 2).
  • Soybean plants with a delayed planting date exhibited a shorter stature (Figure 3).
  • These results show that timely planting of an adapted variety is an important factor in maximizing yield potential.
